A Family Pet Can Help Your Kids to Learn About Responsibility

It is strange, how many parents believe that getting a pet dog may not be good for their family and a pet may turn into a hassle for the family. On the contrary having a pet dog can be very helpful for the emotional as well as the physical well being of the family members. Research has revealed that many people suffering from stress and anxiety related disorders showed remarkable improvement when they brought home a pet. A dog is a loyal and loving companion and can teach young children a lot of virtues.

The new dog or puppy will not only be a play buddy for your child but he will also help in instilling the quality of responsibility in your child. He/ she will learn to be patient and loving towards animals and others. So as you can see a puppy will do so much more for your family besides guarding your house.

Today’s typical household comprises of young children and working parents. Our hectic lifestyle leaves very little time for our children. More often than not when they come back from school we are not around. In the absence of an authoritative figure a child tends to lose his sense of responsibility, work ethic and confidence. Owning a dog means taking care of all his needs. This takes dedication, so when your child takes it upon himself to feed, walk and bathe the dog he is actually developing very important behavioral traits.

Making children responsible with the help of the family pet

Owning a dog and maintaining it takes a lot of hard work. You have to assume complete responsibility for feeding him, taking him out and keeping him clean if you go on a plane then that means purchasing a airline approved dog crates for the plane. If your children are old enough and physically capable of taking on the task you should certainly let them own a pet. You can divide the responsibilities and chores among your children.

In the beginning most children are very excited about getting a pet but when confronted by the chores that it involves they may get a little reluctant. This is where you should step in and show them the time and efforts they spend on their pet all yield positive results and are certainly not a waste. Eventually your children will voluntarily get involved in the dogs upkeep and maintenance. They may not even mind cleaning up the potty mess. You will also need many different dog supplies such as crates, treats and possibly dog dresses for your pet.

Once your kids figure out that their hard work and efforts are responsible for the dogs health and happiness they will be excited to do their chores. When you take your dog for his regular check ups make it a point to take your kids along. Once the vet gives your dog a clean chit, tell your children that the dog is healthy and happy because of their efforts. This creates a sense of accomplishment in your kids.
